Guide for Selecting Pen Mold Types under Batch Injection Molding Conditions And for Compatibility with Multi-cavity Precision Scenarios in Stationery Production

Guide for Selecting Pen Mold Types under Batch Injection Molding Conditions and for Compatibility with Multi-cavity Precision Scenarios in Stationery Production

In the manufacturing process of stationery products, the injection molding production of pens is facing dual engineering constraints of cycle time and precision. A seemingly ordinary watercolor pen, ballpoint pen, or rollerball pen typically has a pen barrel wall thickness ranging from 0.6mm to 1.2mm, and presents a slender tube-like feature. In the context of pursuing single-piece cost control and high cycle rate operation in automated assembly, the structural stability, concentricity tolerance control, and fatigue life of the pen mold directly determine the overall output efficiency of the entire automated assembly line.

1. Manufacturing contradictions under high-speed injection molding conditions and limitations of traditional molds

In large-scale automated pen assembly lines, the clearance between the pen barrel and the pen cap, tail plug, etc., has extremely high tolerance requirements. The single mold forming cycle of a high-speed injection molding machine is usually compressed within 8 to 15 seconds, and the mold cavity is under continuous high-pressure, high-speed melt flushing and alternating thermal stress. If the mold cannot adapt to this condition, defects such as uneven wall thickness, eccentric bending, excessive burrs, and obvious mating lines will occur during the molding process, causing frequent machine stoppages and line disruptions in the subsequent insert core and cover assembly processes.

Traditional molds are mainly limited by two engineering mechanisms when dealing with high-cycle multi-cavity mass production:

Precision limitations of multi-cavity flow and concentricity imbalance: In layouts of 16, 24, and even 32 or more cavities, due to the balance of flow channels and the rigidity of slender cores, the pressure difference and time difference in the filling of each cavity by the melt can easily cause local over-pressurization or shrinkage; the high-speed melt single-directional impact on the slender core can easily cause micrometer-level micro-bending eccentricity, resulting in uneven cross-sectional wall thickness of the pen barrel, affecting air tightness and assembly accuracy.

Physical limitations of wear resistance and corrosion fatigue life: Ordinary pre-hardened mold steel is prone to mechanical wear and scratches when dealing with long-term opening and closing molds and slider core pulling. The micro gap of the parting surface and the guide rail of the slider are prone to mechanical wear and abrasion. When molding plastic containing color mother or additives, the micro gap of the parting surface expands, causing burrs, and the mold will face lower die maintenance after tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of mold cycles, increasing the frequency of machine downtime.

2. Core technologies supporting high-precision multi-cavity pen molds

Modern high-life precision pen molds have formed four complementary engineering mechanisms through the synergy of structural mechanics, flow channel thermal balance, and surface material science:

Hafner slider and multi-directional precise core-pulling mechanism: For complex pen barrels with reverse hooks or pen clamp slots, a precise Hafner (Half) slider parting and inclined top linkage structure is adopted. Through bidirectional or multi-directional synchronous lateral core-pulling to disperse the demolding resistance, the pen barrel surface is avoided from being scratched and deformed, ensuring a smooth and fine mating line.

Flow channel thermal balance and horn/point injection control: Through early DFM (Design for Manufacturing) mold flow analysis to optimize the flow channel size and injection point distribution, the melt enters each cavity at the same pressure, temperature, and speed; combined with horn injection or concealed point injection design, the melt is symmetrically covered around the slender core from the side or hidden end, eliminating the impact force from one side and ensuring the concentric filling of deep-hole pen barrels.

High-quality mold steel ratio and vacuum heat treatment and coating technology: Core forming components use S136 mirror stainless steel, SKD61 hot working mold steel or wear-resistant alloy. Combined with quenching and tempering and nitriding/TD surface wear-resistant treatment, the hardness of the base material and the bonding force of the wear-resistant layer are enhanced, enabling the mold to have a designed fatigue life of 1 million mold cycles.

High rigidity mold frame guidance and micrometer-level temperature-controlled water channel cooling: The mold frame is equipped with high-precision guide columns and guide sleeves to absorb lateral vibrations during opening and closing, and the internal parting cavity and core are equipped with conforming water channels or water separation plates for cooling system, eliminating local heat accumulation and causing workpiece warping deformation.

3. Matching strategies for different pen types and mold parameter configurations

Different pen types have different material characteristics, structural features, and appearance standards, and the molds need to be configured specifically for each type of work:

Large-scale standard pen rod production conditions (watercolor pens, regular neutral pens, ballpoint pens, etc.): Aim for high-speed production, usually adopting a layout of 16 cavities to 32 cavities or higher. The core components such as the core and cavity are made of S136 or SKD61 steel combined with hot runner or balanced cold runner systems. The focus is on ensuring stable operation for 10 million mold cycles and concentricity of the pen rods.

Assembly of multi-component and functional structural parts production conditions (push-button pens, functional pen kits, etc.): Involves small components such as push mechanisms, threaded connections, and pen clamps. The molds need to be compatible with multiple sliders, precise threaders, or multi-directional inclined top structures. The processing accuracy of inserts is strictly controlled to eliminate burrs at the junctions.

Special functions and thick pen types production conditions (marker pens, children's upright pens, thick sketch pens, etc.): The cross-section of the workpiece is variable or the wall thickness is thick. The molds focus on optimizing the transition of the gel position and multi-level stepped cooling water channels, and adapt to ergonomic parting surfaces to ensure clear and formed grip texture.

High wear line spare parts and maintenance conditions (replacement of mold components and wear parts): For wear-prone parts such as pins, core inserts, slider rails, etc., Fanstar establishes a non-standard spare parts processing based on drawings and samples, and integrates with the spare parts library to support online parts replacement, shortening maintenance waiting time.

V. Summary

The key to the injection molding manufacturing of stationery pens lies in balancing the consumption of mold lifespan caused by high-speed continuous production, as well as the strict requirements for concentricity and mold closing line accuracy in the case of slender multi-chambered structures. Selecting a precision multi-chamber mold with a reasonable Haver structure, symmetrical balanced gating, and S136/SKD61 long-life steel is an important foundation for ensuring the stable operation of the automated production line. Through early DFM analysis, structural balance review, and full-size measurement verification of continuous trial molding, it helps to reduce production risks and ensure the high yield delivery of pen products.
